The Florida Panthers have acquired goaltender Akira Schmid from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft.
Strengthening the Crease
Florida is navigating a pivotal offseason. While the acquisition of Brady Tkachuk provided a significant boost to their roster, the team’s goaltending situation remains a point of uncertainty. Sergei Bobrovsky is currently an unrestricted free agent, and while the veteran desires another long-term deal, the Panthers may be hesitant to commit to such a contract given his age. The trade for Schmid suggests that Florida is actively exploring alternatives for the coming season.
Even if the organization moves on from Bobrovsky, it is unlikely that Schmid is viewed as the immediate primary starter. Florida remains positioned to pursue an elite netminder; names like Connor Hellebuyck continue to surface in trade rumors, and the Panthers could still target the 2025 Hart Trophy winner. Additionally, Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues remains a potential target.

Regardless of who eventually takes the starting role, Schmid is expected to serve as a reliable backup option for the 2026-27 campaign.
Resolving the Vegas Logjam
The Golden Knights entered the summer with a surplus of talent in net. With Carter Hart and Adin Hill (contracted through 2031) both under contract, and prospect Carl Lindbom in the mix, the depth chart was crowded.
Schmid’s departure streamlines the Vegas rotation. Hart is expected to slide into the starting role with Hill as the backup, though head coach Ryan Craig may foster a competition for the top spot during training camp. Lindbom will likely serve as the primary AHL option, positioned as the first call-up should an injury occur.
Schmid’s Track Record
Coming off a career year, Schmid appeared in 34 games last season, recording a personal best of 29 wins and two shutouts. A fifth-round pick from the 2018 draft, Schmid has spent five seasons in the NHL, including three years with the New Jersey Devils prior to his two-year tenure in Vegas.
