NEW DELHI, Oct 1 (Reuters) – For Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, becoming a cockpit hero during a dramatic mid-air crisis was far from his childhood ambitions. Originally focused on the family’s textile business, Machchhar’s path to aviation began unexpectedly at 19, a career shift that initially alarmed his mother.
Now a seasoned Boeing 737 captain with over 9,750 flight hours, Machchhar’s dedication to aviation remains deeply personal, though he keeps it separate from his off-duty life. “When I step out of the cockpit, I don’t want anyone to know I’m a pilot,” he said, emphasizing, “I don’t want to discuss aviation. When I wear the uniform, I finish the job. That’s it.”
His actions during the flydubai flight to Israel earned widespread acclaim. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him a “hero,” praising his “courage and unwavering resolve” under extreme danger. Israeli officials confirmed the co-pilot’s attempted sabotage, during which Machchhar was reportedly stabbed and covered in blood on the cockpit floor before activating the door release, enabling passengers and crew to subdue the assailant.
The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where Machchhar, sustaining injuries, received medical care. His 15-year career began at SpiceJet after training in New Zealand, rising to lead training for junior pilots. Joining flydubai in 2022, he has experience managing medical diversions and technical delays, once stating, “Delay isn’t my problem. As long as you’re walking out of the aircraft… is what I want.”
