Folarin Balogun’s proposed transfer to Everton is facing significant hurdles following concerning results from his medical examination. According to reports, the USMNT striker had traveled to Merseyside to finalize his move from AS Monaco, but the deal has encountered an unexpected obstacle.
“Everton medical staff believe he’s not 100% fit,” reported Fabrizio Romano, citing French journalist Fabrice Hawkins. The fitness concerns identified by Everton’s medical team threaten to derail a deal that had seemed nearly finalized just days before the transfer window closed.
However, sources close to AS Monaco and Balogun’s camp have disputed Everton’s assessment, insisting that the player is fully fit and ready for action. This disagreement has cast a cloud of uncertainty over the transfer, as both clubs race to resolve the impasse before the deadline.
The proposed agreement, valued at approximately €45 million in guaranteed fees with an additional €5 million in potential bonuses, would have brought Balogun back to the Premier League. The move would mark his return to England’s top flight following his departure from Arsenal and subsequent stint at Monaco.
As the transfer deadline looms, both Everton and Monaco are under intense pressure to resolve the medical dispute quickly. Failure to reach an agreement could cause the high-profile transfer to collapse entirely.
Everton’s urgent need for a center-forward adds complexity to the situation
Everton’s offensive situation heightens the urgency of resolving the medical dispute promptly. The club recently finalized the permanent sale of Beto to Fiorentina for approximately £17 million, leaving young striker Thierno Barry as their sole recognized center-forward option.
Given this squad shortage, Everton have proactively explored backup options. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club has reached out to Manchester United to inquire about Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee as a potential contingency plan should the Balogun transfer fall through.
Any potential transaction remains dependent on Manchester United’s approval, as the Premier League giants have already rejected inquiries from Italian clubs regarding Zirkzee in the last 48 hours. Meanwhile, journalist Alan Myers reports that Everton are in direct contact with Zirkzee’s representatives, exploring all avenues to secure a forward before the window shuts.
