ESPN announced Tuesday the passing of Chris Spatola, a college basketball analyst for the network and former starting guard at the United States Military Academy. He was 47.
“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” the network said in a statement. “He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Spatola joined ESPN in 2015, contributing analysis for game and studio productions. A four-year starter at West Point, he led the Black Knights in scoring for three seasons and finished his career ranked 10th on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,543 points.
Following his graduation, Spatola served on active duty from 2002 to 2007, deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for exceptional combat performance and the Army Commendation Medal for outstanding leadership.
From 2007 to 2012, Spatola served on the staff of his father-in-law, Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, at Duke. During that tenure, the Blue Devils captured the 2010 national championship and four ACC tournament titles. He also served as a court coach for U.S. national teams that won gold at the 2008 Olympics and the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
