Nadiem Makarim

A panel of judges at the Corruption Crimes Court of the Central Jakarta District Court sentenced former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and Gojek co‑founder Nadiem Makarim to ten years’ imprisonment for his role in the Chromebook procurement corruption case.

Makarim was detained in September 2025 and transferred to house arrest in May due to health concerns; the time already served will be deducted from the imposed sentence.

The court found him guilty of corruption under Article 3 of the Corruption Eradication Law and Article 604 of the Criminal Code.

In addition to the ten‑year prison term, judges imposed a fine of IDR 1 billion (approximately US$55,000), which may be converted to 190 days of imprisonment, and ordered him to pay compensation of IDR 809 billion (about US$45 million).

Indonesia’s Attorney General’s Office launched a formal investigation in May 2025, probing dozens of witnesses linked to Chromebook procurements valued at nearly US$600 million.

Makarim publicly denied any wrongdoing in June 2025, arguing that Chromebooks were a cost‑effective solution for remote learning during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

After being questioned as a witness, he was barred from overseas travel, named a suspect in September 2025, and subsequently detained.

Several trial delays occurred, including a postponement in December 2025 due to Makarim’s post‑surgery recovery, before proceedings resumed in January.
