The Philadelphia Phillies spent much of the season searching for pitching depth as the bullpen endured repeated setbacks and questions lingered about the back end of the rotation. That need prompted the club to take a flier on a former first-round pick who once looked like a cornerstone for a division rival. However, after a brief stint derailed by a mysterious injury, the right-hander has departed Major League Baseball entirely following his release.
Phillies’ Reclamation Project Ends Without a Major League Appearance
Jackson Rutledge arrived in Philadelphia as a reclamation project, with the organization hoping its pitching infrastructure could unlock the potential that made him the 17th overall selection in the 2019 MLB Draft. The experiment never reached the majors; instead, Rutledge’s next opportunity lies thousands of miles away. Shortly after his release, the right-hander signed with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball.
“Jackson Rutledge is officially a SoftBank Hawk,” Yakyu Cosmopolitan reported.
From Nationals Castoff to NPB Opportunity
Rutledge’s move to Japan closes the book on a tenure with the Washington Nationals and Phillies that ended abruptly. Washington designated the right-hander for assignment earlier this year, opening the door for Philadelphia to acquire a pitcher with significant prospect pedigree. That opportunity fizzled without fanfare after Rutledge suffered an undisclosed setback.
“The Nats designated him for assignment, at which point the Phillies claimed him,” Steve Adams wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “He didn’t log any big league work with Philadelphia and pitched only 10 minor league innings — missing some time along the way with an undisclosed injury — before being granted his release late last month in order to pursue the opportunity overseas.”
The episode stands as an unusual footnote in the Phillies’ quest for depth. Philadelphia saw enough upside to claim the former first-rounder, yet never had the chance to evaluate his fit at the major league level. The undisclosed injury adds another layer of uncertainty to a career that has already taken several unexpected turns.
Still, a strong showing with SoftBank could place Rutledge back on the MLB radar. Players increasingly use NPB to refine their arsenals, rebuild confidence, and prove their careers have another chapter. The Phillies never got to see what Rutledge might become; now, he will write that next chapter in Japan.
