Alphonso Smith Jr., a former NFL cornerback who was selected 37th overall in the 2009 draft, has passed away. He was 40 years old.
Smith died by suicide at a residential community in Florida on Wednesday.
Prior to his death, he shared a candid message on Facebook that reflected his personal struggles.
Drafted by the Denver Broncos, Smith was later traded to the Detroit Lions in 2010 and continued his career through the 2012 season, appearing in 42 regular‑season games, 11 of which he started.
Smith played four seasons at Wake Forest University, where he earned consensus All‑American honors in 2008 and was enshrined in the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
