Former President Donald Trump was booed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.
The president appeared on stage at MetLife Stadium (known as New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament) in East Rutherford, New Jersey, alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, to present the trophy to champion Spain after they defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time.
When the two men stepped onto the field, audible boos rose from the crowd.
On July 6, Trump stated that he had personally intervened to overturn the suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun after a contentious red card. He said he called Infantino, prompting FIFA to suspend the red‑card decision and permit Balogun to play in the Round of 16 match against Belgium, which the United States subsequently lost 4‑1.
The reversal sparked anger and disappointment, especially among Belgian supporters.
The reversal was described as unprecedented; The New York Times reported it was the first time FIFA had overturned a red card since 1962.
Trump arrived at the stadium on Sunday aboard Marine One; the helicopter circled the venue roughly 45 minutes before kickoff, and he watched the match from a glass‑enclosed VIP section alongside Infantino.
Also present were Spain’s King Felipe VI, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
