France and the United Kingdom have reached an agreement with Oman to restore safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a joint press release announced on Friday.

The statement, signed by French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, said the cooperation will ensure that Oman’s sovereign waters are secure for vessels.

Macron and Starmer added that they stand ready to deploy a broader multinational military mission to protect freedom of navigation in the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical conduit for the global economy, and guaranteeing safe transit for ships of all nations is a matter of worldwide importance, the release emphasized.

The two governments also reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability in the Middle East and to cooperating with partner states to uphold international law and maritime freedom.

On Thursday, Starmer met Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Saadi to discuss measures to improve security in the Strait.

According to a press release from Starmer’s office, the leaders also discussed the need to reassure the shipping industry about the safety of transits.

Both leaders agreed to work closely together, with Starmer noting that Omani support is essential for restoring safe navigation in the region.

Starmer thanked Oman for its mediation role in the recent US‑Iran memorandum of understanding and reiterated his solidarity with the Sultan.
