G7 leaders will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a dedicated session in Evian, France, driven by U.S. President Donald Trump’s reported openness to advancing peace initiatives after four years of conflict initiated by Russia’s invasion.
Zelensky has advocated for resolute international support following recent Russian attacks that caused significant civilian casualties and destroyed a historic Kyiv cathedral. His priorities include securing decisive action from the G7 to counteract Moscow’s aggression.
European representatives, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, anticipate emphasizing the need for Russia to accept Ukraine’s peace terms without coercion during discussions with U.S. President Trump, who arrived at the summit expressing guarded optimism about potential negotiations.
Despite Zelensky’s proposal for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin—declined by Moscow—Trump indicated positive engagement, citing “two very good conversations” with both leaders. He avoided specifics but confirmed mutual receptiveness to de-escalation efforts.
British Foreign Policy Measures
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced enhancements to support Ukraine, including the provision of enriched uranium for its nuclear facilities and additional targeted sanctions against Russian entities.
UK officials criticized Russia’s “barbaric strikes” and framed new measures as critical to undermining Russia’s war financing while ensuring Ukraine’s energy resilience during winter months.
Independent analysts suggest recent tactical successes have shifted momentum toward Ukraine, urging sustained Western military and financial backing to maintain clarity in the conflict.
Concurrently, a special G7 session will address Iran-related issues, featuring participation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Qatari Emir, and UAE President. Western allies will scrutinize Trump’s proposed Iran ceasefire agreement, which he claims will allow unrestricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz starting Friday.
Trump notably dismissed a proposed British-French naval mission to protect Persian Gulf shipping, asserting U.S. capability to manage security independently.
