G7 foreign ministers demanded that Iran “end its arming of and support” for the Houthis in Yemen, issuing a joint statement ahead of the UN General Assembly.
The group condemned “in the strongest terms” Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, warning that the escalating conflict threatens regional stability and global energy security.
Thousands of refugees have fled Yemen after the Iran-backed group seized territory along the Red Sea coastline, including near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Senior Iranian officials are scheduled to speak at the annual UN General Assembly in New York.
Foreign ministers from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States called on the Houthis to immediately cease military operations and threats against civilian shipping, urging a return to good-faith political negotiations.
They described the Houthi actions as “a dangerous pattern of escalation” that risks further conflict, undermines international trade, and creates global economic instability.
The ministers reaffirmed support for Yemen’s legitimate government and their commitment to the nation’s unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
The statement was issued following a meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
