Gabriel Carriere Set to Advance His Career with the Hartford Wolf Pack

HARTFORD, CT – Goaltender Gabriel Carriere is embarking on a new chapter for the 2026‑27 season. After two years with the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL, he entered the free‑agent market on July 1.

After a brief evaluation, Carriere chose to sign a one‑year contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack. He is enthusiastic about the upcoming season and confident that the arrangement is a good fit.

“Free agency was a new experience for me,” Carriere said. “Hartford showed interest from the start, and our discussions indicated a strong fit with the coaching staff, players, and the city. I’m eager to meet everyone in person and begin contributing.”

Following a successful tenure at the University of Vermont, Carriere joined the Barracuda at the close of the 2023‑24 season. He split the 2024‑25 campaign between the Barracuda and the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder, and then spent most of the 2025‑26 season in the AHL.

His most recent season marked his best performance, as he appeared in a career‑high 31 AHL games for the Barracuda, posting a 15‑12‑3 record, a .896 save percentage, and a 2.76 goals‑against average.

Having recorded a career‑year, Carriere looks forward to building on that success in his new environment with fresh teammates. He is also enthusiastic about the summer’s developments, which suggest the Wolf Pack will field a robust defensive unit bolstered by several veterans.

“It’s very exciting,” Carriere said. “Joining a new team brings new faces, and I’m confident we’ll have a strong defensive group. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together.”

A notable change for the Wolf Pack this summer was a shift behind the bench, as longtime defenseman Jay Leach assumed the head‑coach role. During his tenure as Providence Bruins head coach from 2017‑18 to 2020‑21, Leach led the club to a top‑ten ranking in goals‑against for four consecutive seasons.

In addition, the Wolf Pack and its parent club, the New York Rangers, have added several free agents and made trades, bolstering the roster with a veteran contingent of experienced defensemen for the 2026‑27 season.

This development is encouraging for Carriere, a goaltender keen on advancing his career trajectory.

“That’s always something I love to hear as a goalie,” Carriere remarked. “I may be biased, but I believe defense can win championships, and the top‑down emphasis on that is exactly what I’m anticipating for this season.”

Carriere also hopes to emulate his former teammate, Georgii Romanov. The two shared goaltending duties for parts of two seasons with the San Jose organization before Romanov transferred last summer.

Romanov joined the Springfield Thunderbirds, where he quickly found his rhythm and played a major role in the team’s run to the Atlantic Division Finals last spring. Carriere, who has been following his former teammate, hopes that a similar change of scenery will yield comparable success for him this season.

“I’m super happy for him,” Carriere said. “I tracked his playoff run, and he performed amazingly. A change of scenery can make all the difference, and I’m eager to see what I can contribute to the Hartford team.”
