Gary O’Neil has been appointed as Ipswich Town’s new manager, signing a three-year contract at Portman Road.
O’Neil succeeds Kieran McKenna, who departed the club after guiding them back to the Premier League, citing a personal desire to spend more time with his family.
“It is an honour to be appointed manager of this great football club,” O’Neil told the club’s official website.
“I have followed the progress the club has made over the last few years closely and to now have the opportunity to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited by.
“There is a strong vision and ambition at this club and I am fully aware of the responsibility that brings, given how much it means to its supporters and to the community of Ipswich and Suffolk.
“We all know the challenge ahead as we prepare for the season together and I’m excited to meet everyone and get to work.”
O’Neil was among the leading candidates for the position following McKenna’s resignation, alongside former Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior.
O’Neil replaced Rosenior as Strasbourg head coach in January and guided the club to an eighth-place finish, missing out on European qualification. The 43-year-old made 51 appearances for Ipswich’s rivals Norwich City between 2014 and 2016.
Busy pre-season awaits O’Neil
Analysis from Sky Sports’ Adam Williams:
O’Neil arrives at Portman Road with a busy few weeks on his agenda before Sunderland visit on Saturday August 22 for the Premier League season-opener.
Ipswich’s squad requires strengthening in terms of both depth and quality for their top-flight return after finishing bottom of the Championship in their previous attempt at the level. Despite significant new signings following back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship, Kieran McKenna’s side managed only four wins all season.
O’Neil’s experience at Bournemouth and Wolves, where he faced similar rebuilding challenges with limited transfer windows, provides encouragement for fans.
However, he faces a demanding start to the campaign, including fixtures against Manchester United and Liverpool in their opening three matches, requiring strong early performances to establish himself and win over supporters still processing McKenna’s departure.
While pragmatism may not be the most exciting approach initially, Ipswich will need it to ensure competitive performances and a realistic chance of survival.
