Gaza Death Toll Tops 900 in 2025 Despite Ongoing Ceasefire, Health Ministry Reports

From the start of the ceasefire agreement on 10 October to the end of that month, the ministry recorded 251 deaths. Since then, deadly Israeli attacks have continued every month. The highest monthly death toll this year was recorded in July, when 152 people were killed, including 21 children, according to the figures.

The IDF reports that five of its soldiers have been killed in combat since the ceasefire began, with one contractor dying in an “operational accident.”

Israeli forces also state that they have eliminated hundreds of military operatives since October.

Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (Acled), a conflict monitoring group that verifies attacks through official statements, media reports, and social media sources, has documented roughly 200 Israeli strikes during the ceasefire period. These strikes have reportedly resulted in the deaths of Hamas operatives and other armed “militants” in targeted operations.

Acled noted that the targets included commanders involved in planning the Hamas-led 7 October 2023 attack on Israel—an assault that killed approximately 1,200 people and saw 251 individuals taken hostage, ultimately triggering the ongoing war.

Hugh Lovatt, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, described the situation as a “ceasefire in name only.” He noted that the Israeli military has continued almost daily air and drone strikes, stating that “though it claims to be targeting Hamas or imminent threats, it is Gaza’s civilians that have continued to bear the brunt.”

Lovatt warned that this pattern could become a “central stumbling block” in international efforts to implement President Trump’s proposed ceasefire deal.

The IDF told BBC Verify that it “remains committed” to the ceasefire agreement, while emphasizing that there have been “continued violations and threats posed by Hamas and other terror organizations” in Gaza.
