The euro edged lower against the British pound on Monday as markets responded to the resignation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, prompting the pound to strengthen against most major currencies. At the time of writing, the exchange rate stands at 0.8659, having pulled back from the one‑month high of 0.8689 earlier in the session.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, the former prime minister announced that he would request the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to establish a schedule for the leadership contest, with nominations for his successor set to open on July 9.

He also affirmed that he would continue to serve in office until a successor is selected and would work to guarantee a smooth transition of power.

The Labour Party incurred significant setbacks in last month’s local elections, and calls for his resignation intensified after several junior ministers resigned from the government, casting doubt on his continued leadership.

Andy Burnham, who returned to Parliament earlier this year, is widely regarded as a leading contender to succeed Starmer. He is scheduled to be sworn in later on Monday as the MP for Makerfield following his victory in a recent by‑election.

Looking ahead, market participants will continue to monitor political developments in the United Kingdom. On the data front, the economic calendar remains modest, with preliminary Purchasing Managers’ Index figures scheduled for release on Tuesday and a series of central‑bank speakers slated for the week ahead.
