George Russell Attributes Recent F1 Performance Issues to Software Calibration Rather Than Driving Technique

George Russell believes that Mercedes has identified the source of his recent Formula 1 challenges, allowing him to shift focus away from modifying his driving style. The British driver struggled during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, where he lagged half a second behind teammate Kimi Antonelli in qualifying and later retired from the race following contact with Lewis Hamilton at Turn 5.

Earlier in the weekend, Russell faced energy management issues, with his car running out of battery on the Kemmel Straight and causing him to lose control entering the Les Combes sequence. Unaired team radio communications revealed his frustration with the car’s energy deployment.

Following analysis of the Spa data, Russell confirmed that the root cause was incorrect calibration rather than his driving approach. “There were parameters on the screen that weren’t properly calibrated,” he stated. “It’s not a hardware fault, but there were two distinct issues. The energy deployment wasn’t optimal throughout the lap—similar to what Oscar Piastri experienced—and another separate calibration problem linked to the same system.”

“We can now recalibrate and unlock the full potential of the power unit,” Russell added. The discovery has lifted a mental burden, as he had previously adjusted his driving inputs—throttle application, gear shifts, and corner entry—based on misleading data. “In Silverstone and during Spa’s practice sessions, I was overthinking how to maximize straight-line speed and throttle timing. The data suggested this was the issue, but it wasn’t. All that effort over three sessions was misguided.”
