Georgia Attorney General Calls on SEC to Sanction LSU Over Former NFL Player Controversy

The legal dispute over the SEC’s effort to prohibit former NFL players from participation returns to court on Thursday, with emotions running high on all sides.

According to reporting by Amanda Christovich of Front Office Sports, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has urged the SEC to impose severe consequences should LSU proceed with plans to field players seeking to return to college football following professional stints during the offseason and preseason.

“If LSU does in fact roster one or more professional athletes or demonstrates concrete plans to do so, we would strongly encourage the SEC to take all measures available to address this conduct, up to and including suspending and/or removing LSU from the Conference,” Carr stated in a Wednesday letter to the SEC.

“College athletics are intended for college athletes, and we appreciate the SEC’s prompt action to uphold this principle,” Carr continued. “However, rules cannot be disregarded or manipulated to benefit a particular coach, institution, or program, and we will not remain passive while such actions occur.”

Carr’s statement follows reports of internal discussions regarding potential “extreme measures” against LSU, including the possibility of expulsion from the conference.

The ultimate resolution of this matter rests with the courts. For players seeking retroactive application of the NCAA’s newly adopted five-year eligibility rule, they bear no responsibility for this situation. The current system has created this complexity—and continues to compound it—perhaps with the aim of creating enough chaos to prompt congressional intervention.

Regardless of the outcome, the stakes remain considerable. Even if the SEC refrains from following through on threats to expel LSU, the controversy could generate lasting resentment that might eventually motivate LSU to seek membership elsewhere.
