German federal prosecutors announced Tuesday that a former head of the country’s domestic intelligence agency has been taken into custody on espionage charges.
August Hanning led the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) as its president from December 1998 until November 2005.
The arrest took place in Bad Tölz‑Wolfratshausen, a town in southern Germany, and was accompanied by the detention of a former colleague identified only as Manfred D.
Prosecutors have not disclosed the alleged foreign power for which the two men are suspected of spying.
