The United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence on Saturday, an occasion the White House describes as ‘the most important milestone’ in the nation’s history.
The celebrations include fireworks displays, aerial demonstrations, and an address by US President Donald Trump, with Washington aiming to ‘inspire a renewed love for American history’ through the festivities.
Officials, governments, and royalty from throughout Europe have joined the United States in observing the occasion.
Below are some of the messages they have shared.
Ursula von der Leyen
In a post on X, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: ‘Today we join our American friends in celebrating 250 years of independence.’
She noted that for 250 years, the transatlantic partnership has been shaped by shared values and family ties, and at times strengthened by the bravery and sacrifices made in defense of freedom.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the day as ‘one of humanity’s brightest, strongest, and most influential dreams—the American Dream of an independent, free, and prosperous nation that defends people’s freedom, faith, and the pursuit of happiness.’
He added that, in the 21st century, America’s influence remains undiminished, a reality clearly visible in Ukraine, where the fight for independence, freedom, and the right to happiness is pursued with the same hope, purpose, and determination that drove Americans to win and defend their own independence.
British Royal Family
The British Royal Family posted on social media, sharing footage of King Charles III’s April visit to the United States, arranged to commemorate the anniversary.
Charles also issued a separate statement, extending his ‘warmest congratulations’ to Washington.
‘We were proud and honored to celebrate this special anniversary during our April visit to the United States,’ the statement read.
‘The history of our two nations is one of extraordinary evolution, moving from past conflict to forging one of the closest and most productive alliances globally,’ it continued. ‘Across defense and security, trade and investment, science, research, education, culture, and the arts, the United Kingdom–United States relationship remains unique and far‑reaching.’
Karol Nawrocki
Polish President Karol Nawrocki described the anniversary as ‘a milestone for a nation that has left an indelible mark on the history of the struggle for freedom and democracy.’
He noted that Poland and the United States have been united by the ideals of freedom since the 18th century, brought together by figures such as Pułaski and Kościuszko, the tradition of constitutional governance, the millions of Poles who have contributed to America’s success, and their joint pursuit of a safe and free world.
‘Today,’ he added, ‘our alliance stands as one of the pillars of security for Europe and the entire North Atlantic Alliance.’
French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs
In France, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated in the colors of the United States to mark the occasion, a gesture the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs described as ‘a powerful reminder that the friendship between our two nations dates back to the 18th century.’
Friedrich Merz
In a post on X, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote: ‘250 years since the USA was founded on freedom, democracy, and responsibility.’
He added that Germany and the United States have shared a close friendship throughout history, and that their transatlantic partnership remains indispensable, particularly in challenging times.
Kristrún Frostadóttir
Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir said she was sending ‘heartfelt congratulations’ to Iceland’s ‘dear friends in the United States of America’ ahead of the birthday celebrations.
‘We have shared numerous monumental moments throughout our friendship,’ she said in a video clip, ‘and we will always be grateful for the United States’ support in 1944, when it became the first country to recognize the republic we founded on June 17 of that year.’
Sergio Mattarella
Italian President Sergio Mattarella sent a message to US President Donald Trump, extending his ‘warmest congratulations to the people of the United States, our friends.’
‘At a historic moment marked by unprecedented challenges for humanity,’ he added, ‘it is essential that Washington and Rome—within the Atlantic Alliance and through their participation in the United Nations and other multilateral forums—continue to collaborate to promote peace, security, and prosperity for their peoples and for the world.’
