Gold prices rose significantly on Thursday, driven by easing U.S. Treasury yields and stabilizing oil prices, which helped alleviate concerns about inflation and interest rate hikes.
Spot gold gained 1.1 percent, reaching $4,435.98 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures advanced 1.6 percent to $4,483.44 per ounce.
Market sentiment improved following the release of softer-than-expected U.S. ADP employment figures, leading investors to believe that signs of labor market weakness may encourage the Federal Reserve to hold off on raising interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting.
New York Fed President John Williams stated in a CNBC interview that inflation expectations remain stable and that the impact of rising energy prices has not spread broadly, helping to calm market jitters over a potential rate hike during the September 15-16 meeting.
All eyes will turn to comments from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller later today. In July, Waller had indicated that additional rate increases might be necessary if inflation data continued to run hot.
The U.S. dollar index declined sharply ahead of the August jobs report set for release on Friday, covering both public and private sector employment.
Analysts project non-farm payrolls to add 55,000 jobs in August, compared to a loss of 23,000 in July. The unemployment rate is anticipated to rise slightly to 4.2 percent from 4.1 percent.
Crude oil prices remained steady after three consecutive days of gains, following reassurances from U.S. President Donald Trump that renewed tensions involving Iran would be temporary. He also reiterated the U.S. stance on controlling the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for global oil shipments. U.S. officials have further signaled that energy flows through the region remain strong.
CNN reported that the U.S. military escorted approximately 40 vessels through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, transporting roughly 18 million barrels of oil.
