Multiple Packers beat reporters indicate that this is a strategic roster move, with Melton slated to rejoin the practice squad and later be activated for the gameday roster ahead of Week 1 against the Vikings.

Having been selected in the seventh round of the 2022 draft, Melton now qualifies as a vested veteran, meaning he can be placed on the practice squad without going through waivers.

During the previous season, he recorded four receptions for 107 yards and one touchdown, and added five carries for 35 yards. He contributed on special teams, accounting for 47 percent of snaps, and played 10 percent of offensive snaps.
