The Green Bay Packers have released star running back Josh Jacobs pending the outcome of an investigation into five counts of domestic abuse.
The 28-year-old was booked into the Brown County Jail on Tuesday. The arrest followed an incident on Saturday morning involving the Hobart-Lawrence Police Department in Wisconsin, who responded to a disturbance complaint.
Jacobs faces several allegations, including battery, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct, victim intimidation, strangulation, and suffocation. He was released from custody on Wednesday.
“After reviewing the available evidence in this case, the Brown County District Attorney’s Office is not yet prepared to make a formal charging decision,” District Attorney David L. Lasee stated. “Our office has requested an expanded investigation, as there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist that could impact whether criminal charges are appropriate.”
Through his legal counsel, Jacobs has denied all allegations.
“Josh vehemently denies these allegations. This matter is in the early stages of investigation, and important evidence has not yet been made public,” stated attorneys David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld, and Clarence Duchac in a joint release.
In a follow-up statement on Wednesday, his legal team added: “We are extremely pleased that Josh has been released from custody and that no criminal charges have been filed against him. As previously stated, we encourage everyone to maintain an open mind while the matter undergoes a full review. We remain confident that once all evidence is gathered and evaluated, it will be confirmed that no charges should be brought against Josh.”
The Packers confirmed they are “aware of the matter” but declined to comment further due to the “ongoing legal situation.”
The NFL also issued a brief statement: “We are aware of the report and have been in contact with the club.”
Jacobs, a three-time Pro Bowler (2020, 2022, 2024), is entering his third season in Green Bay following a four-year, $48 million free agent contract signed in 2024. During his career, including his tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders where he led the NFL in rushing, he has amassed 7,803 rushing yards on 1,840 carries and recorded 74 touchdowns over seven seasons.
