Key Points
Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) has undergone a massive leadership transition, with Greg Abel taking over as CEO from Warren Buffett. Abel is expected to be a more hands‑on leader, actively participating in managing the company’s vast portfolio of owned businesses.
Taylor Morrison Home was attractively priced for a reason
Wall Street didn’t have to wait long to see how Greg Abel would run Berkshire Hathaway. In May, roughly five months after he took the top job, Berkshire Hathaway announced that it had agreed to pay $6.8 billion to buy Taylor Morrison Home. Abel believed he was getting an attractive price, and Warren Buffett approved of his handling of the deal.

But it is important to remember that the best buying opportunities often come when businesses and sectors are out of favor. That’s exactly the situation in the housing market right now, with the pending home sales index hovering near historic lows and 36 % below its 2021 high. Abel, however, is not trying to time a housing upturn with the Taylor Morrison acquisition.
In fact, Abel described the purchase as a strategic move to “unify our site‑built homebuilding operations into a combined platform.” The transaction reflects Berkshire Hathaway’s broader, multi‑year effort to strengthen its homebuilding segment rather than a bet on an immediate market recovery.
Berkshire Hathaway has plenty of time
Berkshire Hathaway thinks in decades, not days. At the end of the second quarter of 2026, the company held roughly $365 billion in cash. This gives the firm the flexibility to integrate Taylor Morrison Home over the long term without needing a near‑term rebound in the housing market.
The acquisition is part of a larger strategy to make Berkshire Hathaway a better business in the years ahead by consolidating its homebuilding operations. Being “early” is not a drawback for a financially strong, diversified company; it is an advantage.
