British pharmaceutical giant GSK is utilizing patient data from the 88 million residents across the 11 cities of the Greater Bay Area to expedite drug development in vaccines and cancer treatments. This initiative aligns with local officials’ push for deeper cross-border medical collaboration.
Nicholas Teo, GSK’s General Manager for Hong Kong and Macau, emphasized the critical role of patient data. He noted it serves as “supplementary evidence” to bolster regulatory submissions and potential label expansions, while also helping to “discover benefits beyond the medication itself.”
Teo highlighted vaccines as a prime example of this approach. Although their efficacy against diseases like flu, shingles, and respiratory syncytial virus is well-documented, researchers are increasingly investigating potential cardiovascular and neurological benefits. These additional insights could significantly inform future healthcare policies.
According to Teo, GSK’s core strengths lie in vaccination and disease prevention, specifically targeting shingles, respiratory syncytial virus, and hepatitis B. He also noted the company’s expanding portfolio in oncology and haematology.
The Greater Bay Area is a Chinese government initiative designed to integrate Hong Kong, Macau, and nine cities in Guangdong province into a unified economic hub. Official data shows their combined gross domestic product exceeded US$2.23 trillion last year.
In September of last year, GSK signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area International Clinical Trial Institute. This partnership focuses on a study examining the long-term health impacts of the shingles vaccine.
Teo stated that GSK is providing financial sponsorship for the University of Hong Kong-led study and investing in shared data infrastructure. Through this collaboration, the company can access patient data from hospitals and government agencies—information that pharmaceutical companies cannot directly obtain on their own.
