Guimaraes Stuns Sunderland as Arsenal Seize Top Spot with Dominant Victory

Bruno Guimaraes scored a breathtaking strike just moments after David Raya saved a penalty as Arsenal defeated Sunderland 2-0 to climb above Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League table.

The Black Cats were presented with the opportunity to take the lead when Ezri Konsa was penalised for holding Dan Ballard in the second half, but Raya made a superb save, tipping Enzo Le Fee’s spot kick onto the post.

Merely 121 seconds later, Guimaraes — whose every touch had been jeered by the home supporters owing to his Newcastle allegiance — unleashed a remarkable shot into the top corner from outside the box, finding the back of the net for his first Arsenal goal and silencing the stadium.

Arsenal had to dig deep to withstand a spirited late surge from the home side, with Raya producing another excellent save to deny Nordi Mukiele, before Bukayo Saka sealed the result from the spot in stoppage time after Reinildo Mandava was sent off with a second yellow card for pulling him down.

The victory, Arsenal’s fourth consecutive win in the Premier League and sixth across all competitions, underlines an impressive start to the season and places the champions three points clear of Manchester City, who face Manchester United live on Sky Sports on Sunday.

For Sunderland, the sting of defeat is compounded by the identity of the goalscorer who broke the deadlock so soon after they appeared poised to convert their penalty into a leading goal. They remain on four points, the latest team to be dispatched by Mikel Arteta’s side.
