A gunman opened fire in a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday, killing at least two people and wounding several others, including three police officers.
Garret Parten, a spokesperson for the department, confirmed to journalists that the shooter also died at the scene.
According to Parten, officers were dispatched to a reported shooting at a downtown high-rise shortly after 4:30 p.m. local time. Upon entering the building, they discovered the victims within minutes.
Parten stated that one individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while four others were transported to a hospital, where one subsequently succumbed to injuries.
Three police officers were also hospitalized, with two having sustained gunshot wounds. All three remain in stable condition, as reported by Hennepin County Medical Center.
Parten noted that the circumstances surrounding the shooter’s death remain unclear pending further investigation.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding a potential motive or the current condition of those injured in the attack.
Social media footage captured police officers aiming their weapons toward an apartment building situated near the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed gratitude for emergency responders in a series of posts on X, confirming that state officials are assisting local law enforcement at the scene.
“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz stated.
“Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”
Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth offered her condolences to the victims, describing the incident as a “heinous crime.”
The Minneapolis shooting occurred on the same day as a separate incident at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia.
Officials reported that a 19-year-old gunman forced entry into the elementary school on Wednesday morning, shot and wounded a staff member, and subsequently took his own life.
These events follow a spate of mass shootings in Chicago, Illinois, and Trenton, New Jersey, on Sunday, which left at least three people dead and 18 others injured.
