“Hadestown: The Musical” Hits Streaming After Record-Breaking Theatrical Run

A live capture of the Tony-winning sensation Hadestown: The Musical arrives on digital streaming this week following a remarkable theatrical run.

Filmed across three performances at London’s Lyric Theatre in late February and early March 2025, the production blends modern American folk with New Orleans-inspired jazz. The staging reunites the five original core Broadway cast members: Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, Patrick Page as Hades, Amber Gray as Persephone, and André De Shields as Hermes.

Directed for the stage by Rachel Chavkin and written by Anaïs Mitchell, the musical intertwines two mythic love stories. Brett Sullivan directed the filmed version for the big screen. At the 73rd Tony Awards in 2019, the show claimed eight trophies, including Best Musical, Best Featured Actor for De Shields, Best Direction for Chavkin, and Best Original Score for Mitchell.

Released in limited domestic theaters on July 24 by Crosswalk (Bleecker Street’s event cinema division) and LD Entertainment, the film grossed $10.2 million from 1,949 locations in its opening weekend, debuting at No. 3. To date, it has earned $20.7 million domestically—surpassing Hamilton ($16.9 million domestic in 2020) to become the highest-grossing filmed theater capture in U.S. history, according to IndieWire. Hamilton ultimately reached $20.9 million worldwide with international receipts.

Critics and audiences embraced the adaptation: it holds a 97% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 37 reviews and a 98% audience score from over 1,000 verified ratings.

‘Hadestown: The Musical’ Arrives On PVOD Tuesday

Hadestown: The Musical debuts on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) Tuesday, Aug. 25, per a new Prime Video listing.

The title will be available for purchase at $24.99 on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube Movies & TV. While rental pricing hasn’t been confirmed, standard PVOD rentals typically run $5 below purchase price, suggesting a 48-hour rental window at $19.99.
