Harry Kane has been voted Germany’s footballer of the year for 2026, making history as the first English player to ever claim the prestigious accolade.

The Bayern Munich striker enjoyed an extraordinary campaign, netting 61 goals across all competitions to spearhead his club’s domestic double and a charge to the Champions League semi-finals. The award, organized by Kicker magazine and decided by a vote of 695 members of the German sports journalists’ association, recognizes top-tier talent within the Bundesliga and German players plying their trade abroad.

Kane secured the honor with 272 votes, comfortably ahead of Bayern teammate Michael Olise, who finished second for the second consecutive year with 203 votes. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl lauded the England captain’s impact, stating, “It’s almost impossible to find the right superlatives to describe Harry Kane—sometimes I’m at a loss for words. He’s already been named England’s Footballer of the Year, and now he’s also won it in Germany.”

As the England captain, Kane is now a leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, set to be awarded in London this October. A victory would make him only the second English player to win the award while playing for a German club, alongside Kevin Keegan’s triumphs with Hamburg in 1978 and 1979.

On the club front, Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was named coach of the year, while women’s team captain Giulia Gwinn took home the prize for best female player. Kane and Kompany are set to be honored during Bayern’s Bundesliga season opener against VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on Friday, following the club’s 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup on Saturday. Additionally, Kane recently added the 2026 Golden Shoe to his trophy cabinet, recognizing him as the top scorer across Europe’s premier leagues last season.
