Heartworms Unveils Dance-Rock Single ‘Guess I’m Stuck In The Dark’ and Explores Uncertainty and Dark Humour in New Album
Heartworms introduces her bold, dance-driven single ‘Guess I’m Stuck In The Dark’, discussing her upcoming album that explores themes of uncertainty and dark humour.
The track, the first taste of her follow-up to the acclaimed 2025 debut Glutton For Punishment, is a groove-based indie noir banger. Layering glitterball shimmers over her stark, macabre sound, Jojo Orme investigates how fear of the dark can be harnessed to party. The song sprung from a writing session interrupted by a power cut in the bathroom, combined with a lingering fear of the dark and stream-of-consciousness lyrical flow. Returning to London, Orme brought the track to producer Dan Carey, who stripped it back to its bare essentials.
Speaking fresh from intimate shows in Italy—where the single was born—Orme describes the song’s genesis as an incident involving a power cut during a toilet break. She recounts struggling with a lack of ideas and shyness, finding that recording vocals felt insecure. The track reflects her internal struggle to be authentic rather than performative, allowing the darkness to strip away pretence.
Heartworms notes the album’s lyrical cohesion, driven by themes of uncertainty and dark humour. Rather than a singular character, the music moves through various emotional landscapes like water, adopting the shape of each experience.
Regarding her visual evolution, she explains that abandoning the all-black aesthetic in favor of a woollen suit influenced performance style. Ironically, this new look complements the Fender Telecaster she prefers over her Firebird, which she had previously shied away from due to its physical shape.
Orme details the launch of her new era in Italy, noting a shift toward a more comfortable, unconventional aesthetic. She also reveals her participation in a co-headline tour with Bloc Party and Interpol, while sharing her affection for the band Hideo Kojima (known for Metal Gear) and her excitement for dates supporting them in Berlin, London, Leeds, and Reykjavik.
