NAIROBI, Kenya –A high‑rise building collapsed on Friday in a bustling commercial district of Kenya’s capital, leaving many individuals believed to be trapped under the debris.
The structure, still under construction, gave way on a busy commercial thoroughfare in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district, an area frequently packed with thousands of traders and residents.
Nairobi Police Chief Issa Mohamud noted that the building comprised more than ten floors under construction. Rescue efforts were hampered when police discharged tear gas at individuals looting nearby shops, as officers worked to secure the site and facilitate access for emergency responders.
The Kenya Red Cross announced that its personnel were en route and appealed to those at the scene to allow responders sufficient space to operate safely.
Building collapses have become a frequent occurrence in Nairobi. County officials issuing building permits have faced accusations of neglecting thorough inspections to ensure developers adhere to safety regulations and construction standards.
