As a contrarian technology investor, I seek opportunities in overlooked or undervalued sectors. Currently, Cerebras Systems has captured my attention. When the Sunnyvale, California-based AI chip manufacturer debuted on public markets in May, I admired its technological innovation but considered the stock significantly overvalued. The shares climbed from their $185 IPO price to a peak of $386, yet I cautioned investors against purchasing at those elevated levels, even releasing a detailed analysis outlining my reservations. However, with the stock now down approximately 72% from its high, the landscape appears transformed. Key takeaways include Cerebras’ pioneering Wafer-Scale Engine architecture potentially delivering a decisive edge in AI processing capabilities. Its technology aligns closely with AI inference—the process of applying trained models to generate responses and execute tasks—an area poised for explosive growth. Additionally, established customer partnerships and a robust order backlog suggest accelerated revenue expansion ahead. While Cerebras shares have been impacted by the wider semiconductor sector downturn, unique company-specific challenges persist. Notably, OpenAI represents roughly $20 billion of Cerebras’ committed contracts. Concerns arose following speculation that OpenAI may have utilized Nvidia processors for a recent AI initiative. I believe these worries are largely unfounded. It’s entirely plausible that OpenAI temporarily relied on Nvidia as Cerebras scales its infrastructure—a strategic move that doesn’t undermine the long-term viability of their partnership. Why I’m reconsidering my stance A breakthrough chip design I’ve spent years studying semiconductor advancements, and Cerebras’ Wafer-Scale Engine stands among the most remarkable innovations I’ve encountered recently. In contrast to conventional processors, this chip integrates immense computational power and memory bandwidth onto a singular silicon substrate. This configuration enables rapid data processing without frequent transfers across multiple chips—an engineering feat that confers a tangible competitive advantage. The shift toward AI inference The earlier phase of the AI boom centered primarily on training increasingly complex models. Today, however, the true frontier lies in inference—the practical application of those models to produce outputs and perform real-world functions. Cerebras excels in this domain, giving it strong potential to rival traditional GPU leaders like Nvidia. CBRS YTD chart Cerebras, YTD Interestingly, I view Cerebras more as a collaborator than a direct competitor to Nvidia. Through its alliance with Amazon Web Services, Cerebras is pioneering a method known as inference disaggregation, distributing computational tasks between specialized components. Specifically, AWS’s Trainium chips manage incoming requests (“prefill”), whereas Cerebras devices handle output generation (“decode”). This hybrid model could dramatically expand Cerebras’ addressable market. Strategic alliances and monumental growth prospects Cerebras has forged connections with industry titans such as OpenAI, AMD, AWS, and Flex. Most compelling is the disparity between its contracted obligations and current earnings. The company reports around $25 billion in outstanding performance commitments, with roughly $20 billion linked to OpenAI alone—far exceeding the approximately $210 million in quarterly core revenue reported last quarter. Although scaling operations will be crucial to meeting these demands, I anticipate revenues surpassing $2.8 billion by 2027 alongside improved cash flow. Why act now? Trading at approximately $107 per share, I consider the current undervaluation a prime opportunity to acquire stakes in a forward-thinking company with considerable upside. My projected target price at Freedom Capital Markets stands at $209, suggesting nearly 91% upside from today’s levels. Final assessment Risks remain evident. Cerebras must deliver on its sizable client agreements and demonstrate technological superiority amid fierce competition led by Nvidia. Nevertheless, investors seem overly focused on short-term volatility instead of acknowledging Cerebras’ transformative potential. Much like my earlier cautionary stance during its initial rally, I now advocate for a contrarian approach—capitalizing on fear-driven market movements.
