Senior banking executives indicate that Hong Kong is set to assume an expanded role in financing the international growth of Chinese green technology firms. This shift is driven by geopolitical fragmentation and elevated funding costs, which are fundamentally altering capital deployment strategies within the global energy transition.
Executives from Bank of China (Hong Kong), DBS, HSBC, and Standard Chartered noted during a Monday panel discussion that the city’s robust sustainable-finance market and offshore yuan liquidity could effectively direct capital toward green and climate-resilience initiatives in developing economies.
An annual forum co-organized by the Hong Kong Green Finance Association and the Greater Bay Area Green Finance Alliance convened policymakers, financiers, and industry leaders to address sustainable investment strategies against a backdrop of escalating geopolitical, trade, and economic uncertainty.
Wang Huabin, deputy CEO of Bank of China (Hong Kong), stated that Chinese enterprises operating in solar power, wind energy, battery production, and other green technology sectors are increasingly deploying their solutions internationally, particularly targeting the Global South. He emphasized that Hong Kong could assume a more significant role in financing these companies as they expand into developing markets.
Wang highlighted that Hong Kong has led Asia in sustainable finance for years and is strategically positioned to serve as a bridge for Chinese green technology expanding globally. He added that the city’s sustainable-finance market, offshore yuan liquidity, and professional services can be synergized to deliver both financing and comprehensive professional support for Chinese enterprises investing overseas.
Natalie Blyth, HSBC’s global head of sustainable finance and transition, remarked that companies based in mainland China possess some of the most dynamic low-carbon technologies in the world.
