Hong Kong police have dismantled a burglary gang that exploited illegal immigrants, linking the group to at least 25 robberies across the city in recent weeks. The thefts yielded more than HK$3.6 million (US$458,773) in cash and valuables.
Six individuals, aged 31 to 45—five from mainland China and one local resident—were taken into custody during a Friday swoop. The arrests followed a review of surveillance footage, police reported.
Three of the mainland suspects, all male, were found to be illegal immigrants. The other two, a couple believed to be the operation’s masterminds, entered Hong Kong using two‑way permits—travel documents issued by Beijing for visits to the city or Macau.
A local man arrested in the operation served as the group’s driver.
