Hong Kong Records 18% Rise in Ransomware Cases Despite Overall Decline in Tech Crime
Hong Kong has recorded a nearly 18 percent increase in ransomware cases in the first three quarters of this year, despite an overall drop in technology crime. Police attribute this surge to artificial intelligence-aided attacks. Chief Superintendent Raymond Lam Cheuk-ho of the Cybersecurity and Technology Crime Bureau stated that police had recorded cases of AI agents and other forms of artificial intelligence being used in cyberattacks as recently as last month. The superintendent highlighted that the use of AI in cyberoffenses is escalating, prompting the bureau to enhance its monitoring and response capabilities. “We recognize the growing impact of artificial intelligence on cybercrime,” the superintendent added, emphasizing the need for continuous adaptation in defensive strategies.
