A proposed lighting scheme along The Peak’s walking trails is under review following increased criticism that the installations compromise the area’s natural heritage.
Conceived as a successor to a retired light exhibition, the initiative has been regarded as counterproductive by both local residents and visitors.
A South China Morning Post investigation examines the factors contributing to the project’s current challenges.
1. What is the project about?
The Tourism Board proposed compact light installations at designated points along the walking trail near Lugard Road and Harlech Road to supplement The Peak’s existing attractions.
The features employ a soft, low-glare lighting scheme and are planned for operation between 7pm and 10pm over a 12-month trial period, according to the Board.
