Conservation work largely depends on philanthropist donations and volunteer dedication, leaving many projects stalled because of insufficient funding.

The federal government spends about A$700 million directly on nature protection, a fraction of the A$33 billion (or 1 % of GDP) that conservationists argue is required. Although the figure is notable, experts such as Paul Elton consider it reasonable.

According to his research—disputed by the government—more than A$26 billion continues to be allocated to subsidies for mining, intensive agriculture and fuel, despite Australia’s global pledges to curb them.

“For every dollar the government spends on positive biodiversity action, there is A$26 being spent on subsidies that harm nature,” he told the BBC. “That’s a stark imbalance.”

Minister Watt did not directly address conservationists’ demands but said: “We remain committed to long‑term environmental recovery, in partnership with state and local governments, community and environmental groups.”

While public sentiment is shifting, there is scepticism that the government will prioritise the environment amid competing demands and compounding crises until voters compel action.

“The community will say we should spend a lot on the environment. But when asked what they are prepared to sacrifice to secure that funding, they lose interest,” Hill says.

In the face of so many challenges and what they see as limited progress, advocates admit it is difficult to retain hope.

“We know what the problems are. We know how to address them. We know that spending money on the environment pays back many times over,” says Ritchie, a mammal ecologist.

“It’s like being a doctor and seeing all these sick people in the community and you know how to fix them, but no one will let you do that.”
