In a rare bipartisan display, the US House of Representatives voted 215-208 on Wednesday to approve a war powers resolution aimed at halting military operations against Iran, directly challenging President Donald Trump’s leadership.
The measure secured passage with support from four Republican lawmakers who joined Democrats in pushing back against the administration’s Middle East policies. Lawmakers argued that the three-month conflict has created significant economic strain, with rising gas prices and inflation affecting American consumers.
House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously attempted to block the resolution, halting floor proceedings two weeks ago when the measure appeared poised for approval. Despite this intervention, opposition to the war has continued to grow as the conflict extends and peace negotiations remain stalled.
The resolution now moves to the Senate, where similar bipartisan efforts are already underway. Last month, a group of Republican senators broke ranks with Trump to advance a comparable war powers measure, indicating mounting concern within the president’s own party.
While the current resolution would not immediately cease hostilities, it represents a symbolic step asserting congressional authority over military action. The measure would require the administration to seek congressional approval for any further military engagement in Iran within 60 days.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that such legislation could complicate diplomatic efforts, suggesting that Iran might perceive congressional limitations as preventing meaningful negotiations. The tension highlights the ongoing constitutional debate over war powers between the executive and legislative branches.
The White House has maintained that hostilities ceased following a ceasefire declaration, though critics argue this interpretation circumvents the War Powers Act’s requirements for presidential consultation with Congress.
