Veteran producers Howard Baldwin, Karen Baldwin, and Todd Slater have launched HKT Entertainment & Sports Group with significant backing from Thessalon First Nation, marking a landmark collaboration in Indigenous media development.
The venture represents the first private investment dedicated to a film fund and media‑focused content company created to support Thessalon First Nation, an Ojibwe community in Ontario’s Algoma District.
This initiative operates within the historic 2023 CAD$10 billion Canada‑Ontario settlement. That agreement restores annuity payments rooted in the 1850 Robinson Huron Treaty, which had eluded recognition for nearly a century.
Under the arrangement, HKT will produce content centered on First Nation narratives and cultures, complemented by a broader slate that spans digital media, podcasts, Broadway productions and live entertainment.
A flagship undertaking is an ambitious Roots‑style epic series that explores the historical trajectories and cultural heritage of First Nations peoples, developed jointly with community members.
Beyond narrative storytelling, HKT is structured around a diversified portfolio—encompassing film, television, streaming platforms and live events—to nurture commercially viable projects with artistic ambition.
One early milestone is a co‑production role in the Broadway revival of *Damn Yankees*, a highly acclaimed musical previously led by Haley Swindal and now featuring stars including Neil Patrick Harris, Austin Scott and Julianne Hough.
The newly imagined stage adaptation recently achieved a sold‑out run at Washington’s Arena Stage and garnered 13 Helen Hayes Award nominations, collecting eight wins including Best Musical.
Howard and Karen Baldwin bring extensive industry experience, with a record of award‑nominated works ranging from *Ray* and *Sahara* to Olympic documentary *Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story*.
Todd Slater contributes more than twenty years in film financing, content acquisition and international distribution, overseeing recent projects such as *The Optimist*, *Bella* and *Lunar Colony*.
“Collectively we have amassed a versatile filmography across major studios and independent releases, earning numerous nominations and honors,” said Howard Baldwin.
<p class=”paragraph larva // lrv-u-margin-lr-auto>”Independent filmmaking often forces producers to rebuild entire workflow systems for each project. This fund provides a sustainable foundation—a dedicated space for credible commercial ideas and a production pipeline to bring those stories to life.”
<p class=”paragraph larva // lrv-u-margin-lr-auto>”The partnership extends beyond traditional financing. Its core goal is to establish a disciplined investment platform coupled with a multimedia operation capable of turning trusted concepts into completed entertainment—be they movies, television, podcasts or other emerging formats.”
Thessalon First Nation stated in a press release that the partnership presents a unique chance to engage directly in global entertainment through an experienced Hollywood producing and financing team.
“Equally important, the ethical values driving HKT projects—the resilience of perseverance, opportunities seized and the triumph of the human spirit—resonate deeply with us,” the Nation declared.
<p class=”paragraph larva // lrv-u-margin-lr-auto>”Fondly, Karen Baldwin added. ‘We have long believed that meaningful collaborations begin with shared values. Our partners are not merely underwriting a catalog of films or television; we are constructing a true business together, and we intend for that enterprise to reflect purpose.’”
