RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes’ top line delivered when it mattered most, propelling their team to a crucial 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5. Andrei Svechnikov scored twice and Sebastian Aho netted his first goal in six games, giving Carolina a commanding 3-2 series lead heading into Game 6.
The Hurricanes capitalized on disciplined penalties by Vegas, with both teams trading goals in the first period before Carolina pulled away in the second. Vladimir Tarasenko’s power-play goal at 12:19 of the opening frame tied the game after Jack Eichel’s assist setup gave Vegas an early advantage.
Jordan Staal answered just 34 seconds later, extending his goal-scoring streak to five games and matching the NHL record for most consecutive scores in a Stanley Cup Final. The last player to achieve this feat was Yvan Cournoyer in 1973.
Carolina’s advantage grew to 3-1 midway through the second period on Svechnikov’s power-play goal, which came during a double-minor penalty by Mark Stone. Nikolai Kovalchuk’s assist set up Pavel Dorofeyev’s goal for Vegas before the hurricanes pulled away.
William Karlsson left the game in the second period after being hit by Sean Walker and remained hospitalized for further examination. Despite trailing in shots on goal, Carolina’s defense stood strong, with K’Andre Miller blocking critical shots in the third period as the Hurricanes protected their lead.
The victory gives Carolina the opportunity to capture their first Stanley Cup since 2006, with Game 6 scheduled for Sunday at 8 p.m. ET in Vegas. Historically, teams that win Game 5 when trailing 2-2 have gone on to win the championship 20 times in 27 occasions.
Both teams showed resilience throughout the contest, with Vegas pulling their goaltender for a 6-on-4 advantage late in the third. However, Carolina’s netminder held firm, sealing the win and putting the Hurricanes in the driver’s seat for their first championship in nearly two decades.
