West Indies cricketers Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford have received official reprimands for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second Men’s T20I match against India in Ranchi on Friday.
Powell was found to have breached Article 2.2, which addresses the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures during an international match. Rutherford violated Article 2.8, which pertains to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.
Each player has been assigned one demerit point, marking their first offense within a 24-month period. According to ICC guidelines, these demerit points will remain on their disciplinary records for twenty-four months before being expunged.
The infractions occurred during the game: in the sixth over, after being dismissed by Mayank Yadav, Powell hit the ball away with his bat. In the 13th over, Rutherford yelled aggressively at the umpire following a decision on a delivery he believed was wide.
Both players admitted their offenses and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for formal hearings.
The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Rohan Pandit, along with third umpire Nitin Menon and fourth umpire Virender Sharma.
Notably, if either player accumulates four or more demerit points within the 24-month period, they may face a suspension. Two suspension points translate to a ban from one Test match, two ODIs, or two T20Is, whichever comes first.
