[ICC Revokes Demerit Point on Gaddafi Stadium Pitch After Thorough Review]

The International Cricket Council’s appeals panel has officially lifted the demerit point levied against Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The penalty originated after the ground received criticism for presenting an “unsatisfactory” playing surface in support of spin bowlers during the third ODI hosted by Pakistan against Australia in June. This marked the inaugural instance of any demerit being imposed on Gaddafi Stadium.Under cross‑examination, the pitch attracted considerable scrutiny because it appeared to provide undue advantage to spin bowlers, influencing a low‑scoring contest in which Pakistan secured a four‑wicket triumph—Australia were allotted 157 runs in merely 42 overs. Notably, this became the sole One‑Day International of the three‑match series to finish below the 200‑run ceiling. Throughout the tournament, Pakistan’s top‑order batsmen delivered standout performances across Rawalpindi and Lahore, while team captain Shaheen Afridi publicly defended the fielding strategy.

In its formal declaration, the ICC stated that the panel annulled the sanction after a meticulous review of match footage, the referee’s report, and inputs from the involved squads, finding that “the pitch did not display sufficient unevenness or spin anomalies.”

A Pacific Board representative indicated that the governing body was evaluating a potential challenge to the measure. “Having weighed the ICC’s recommendations against the substantive evidence, a definitive judgment will be rendered on whether to contest the ruling. Such adjudication has already been initiated,” the spokesperson asserted.

Referee Graeme Labrooy officially classified the venue as “unsatisfactory,” describing it as “slow and low” that rendered run‑accumulation “extremely difficult.” He added that the condition was particularly detrimental to open batters who required extra time to stabilise before generating totals, while simultaneously amplifying benefits for spin bowlers from the outset through to the end of the match. This constitutes the second occasion on which the Pacific Board has overturned an ICC‑mandated pitch sanction. Previously, the board had successfully contested a demerit assigned to Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium for delivering an “unsatisfactory” surface that compromised Pakistan’s campaign in the December 2022 Test against England—a match the tourists claimed by winning 74 runs after posting a record 506/4 on the first day.

Gaddafi Stadium remains slated to host four One‑Day International matches across a triangular series involving Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England during October, alongside a subsequent Test fixture against Sri Lanka in November.

Separately, the Maple Leaf Cricket Ground in King City, Ontario, continues to retain three demerit points following confirmation that the referee’s “unfit” assessment applied to the playing surface for the Canada‑versus‑Netherlands encounter in the Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 held on 16 June. Conversely, the panel concurred with the earlier appeal regarding the 8 June fixture, designating the pitch as compliant with “satisfactory standards” despite prior discordance.
