Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed during an ICE operation targeting unauthorized residents, marking another deadly encounter under the current administration’s immigration policies.
United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that an immigration officer fatally shot a man during a vehicle stop in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday. The individual, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, was targeted in a “targeted enforcement operation” aimed at unauthorized individuals.
Ronaldo Salgado, who identified himself as the victim’s son, told Telemundo Houston that his father was seeking day laborers in the area when the incident occurred. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Salgado Araujo ignored orders to halt, rammed an ICE vehicle, and attempted to strike an officer with his vehicle. Surveillance footage from a nearby business, reviewed by Reuters, showed the victim lying on the ground beside a white van surrounded by officers.
Salgado Araujo’s killing comes amid a surge in ICE arrests, with approximately 2,000 migrants detained daily last week. Democratic U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia and Juan Proano, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, have called for an independent investigation, citing discrepancies in official accounts of prior ICE-related fatalities.
Similar disputes arose in the January deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, where ICE claimed self-defense, while local authorities and witnesses contradicted those assertions. Despite the controversy, ICE has continued intensified enforcement actions under the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
