India defeated host Zimbabwe by 90 runs in the second T20I at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, July 25, clinching the T20I series. The Men in Blue secured their first-ever series under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer with a match in hand.
Ishan Kishan’s dynamic batting propelled the visiting side to a formidable 219 in the first innings, a total comfortably defended through an outstanding bowling performance, notably from impact players Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, and Tilak Varma.
ZIM vs IND: Match Highlights
1. Kishan and Varma Deliver Match-Defining Contributions
Both Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma required a confidence boost heading into the series against Zimbabwe. They delivered emphatically in the second T20I at Harare, registering half-centuries. Kishan scored 81 off 44 balls, while Varma remained unbeaten on 60 off just 29 deliveries, powering the strike rate to over 200.
2. Brian Bennett Shows Promise of Future Stardom
Brian Bennett is widely regarded as the next Zimbabwean superstar, and he reaffirmed that belief today. The young batsman struck 32 runs off 19 balls, smashing three boundaries and three maximums before being dismissed by Yash Thakur.
3. India Clinches T20I Series Under Shreyas Iyer’s Leadership
Supported by a disciplined bowling unit featuring Abhishek Sharma, Prince Yadav, and debutant Yash Thakur, India finally secured a T20I series victory under new captain Shreyas Iyer. This triumph provides much-needed optimism for the defending T20I champions, who previously lost series to Ireland and England without a single win.
ZIM vs IND: Player Reactions
Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe Captain:
“I thought the boys bowled well in patches, credit to India. Some the shots, some the skill from the Indians were something to admire. Our fielding could have been better. Ishan has done that quite regularly and consistently as well and he is going through that patch as well. Certainly something to learn from and hopefully it will help us become better. I as a captain have been letting the team down with the bat. I will try my best in the next game.”
Shreyas Iyer, India Captain:
“I feel excited. Comprehensive win, brilliant contribution from each and everyone. Started from batting, I think the way Ishan and Tilak played was outstanding. I thought 180-200 would be par score but we ended up getting 220 which was the icing on the cake. That’s how you have to approach the game, it’s about the attitude. Be in the present and try to execute. One of our players got injured unfortunately so you might see a few changes tomorrow.”
Ishan Kishan, Player of the Match:
“Obviously when you get runs for your team you end up getting a good total. I did not feel that the wicket was where you can just go and score runs. There was the odd bounce for few deliveries so we felt we needed partnerships. You don’t have to think about wickets, past is past and just see what bowlers you can target. Very happy to see them, Mayank, Yash and Prince. They have great stories behind their success. Good to see them and have them around.”
