India to Host Historic Inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027, Following 2006 Men’s Edition

The ICC confirmed on Wednesday that the inaugural six-team Women’s Champions Trophy will be hosted by India in 2027, shifting from its original venue in Sri Lanka. The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 14 to 28 across Mumbai and Vadodara, with participation from Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

India’s hosting history for the Champions Trophy hinges on whether men’s and women’s editions are treated separately. The 2006 men’s tournament, held across Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mohali, and Mumbai, marked the first time India hosted the event, with Australia defeating the West Indies in the final. This edition also initiated Australia’s dominance, as they went on to win the 2009 Champions Trophy, becoming the first team to win consecutive titles.

The 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy represents India’s second hosting stint and the first-ever women’s edition of the competition. The tournament will adopt a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the February 28 final. Mumbai’s CCI and Vadodara International Cricket Stadium will serve as venues. Originally planned for Sri Lanka, the event was relocated following the ICC’s evaluation of potential hosts, with India ultimately recommended and approved on September 2.

India’s 2029 scheduling for the men’s Champions Trophy aligns with its 2024-2031 tournament cycle, making it the third consecutive Champions Trophy hosted by the country if both 2027 events proceed as planned.

A New Era for Women’s Cricket

Distinct from the men’s competition—first contested in 1998 as the ICC KnockOut—the Women’s Champions Trophy introduces a new T20I-format tournament. The inaugural six-team lineup reflects the ICC Women’s T20I rankings as of July 6, with Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka securing qualification. This follows India’s hosting of the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025, further cementing its role as a key hub for women’s international cricket.
