An Indian military transport aircraft crashed on Saturday during an attempted landing at an air force station in the country’s remote northeastern region, according to an official military statement.
The air force confirmed that the Russian-made Antonov An-32 “met with an accident today while landing at Jorhat,” a city located in the state of Assam. The official statement did not specify the number of personnel on board or provide details regarding casualties.
“A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the military added.
Footage broadcast by news channel NDTV showed the wreckage of the aircraft broken into several pieces, with a dense plume of black smoke rising from the crash site.
The An-32, a twin-engine turboprop, is specifically engineered for high-altitude operations and performance in extreme climates. The Indian Air Force currently operates approximately 100 of these aircraft to facilitate military logistics and civilian aid in the nation’s most isolated mountainous regions.
The last significant accident involving this aircraft model occurred in 2019 in Arunachal Pradesh, near the border with China, resulting in 13 fatalities.
