Indonesia’s newly appointed police chief confronts the challenge of reconciling rising public calls for accountability and autonomy while the force works to restore its reputation after several scandals in recent years.
Although Suyudi Ario Seto, 53, succeeded Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Thursday, the administration is evaluating proposals to overhaul the influential agency, such as adjusting its workplace culture and restricting officers from occupying public offices outside the police.
Besides naming Suyudi, President Prabowo Subianto also carried out a cabinet reshuffle, introducing broad changes to major ministerial and senior government roles, with Listyo assigned to lead the Executive Office of the President (KSP).
Parliament confirmed Suyudi’s appointment, and he was sworn in just hours after his confirmation hearing.
