Inter Miami entered Matchday 3 of the 2026 Leagues Cup needing a victory and favorable results elsewhere to remain in contention. Despite Lionel Messi’s unexpected return to action, the club suffered a disappointing early exit following one of the most dramatic opening-stage collapses in recent tournament history.

Miami hosted Club Leon on Wednesday with a crucial win required to secure a top-four position. After tallying just three points from a 4-2 win over Atletico San Luis and a narrow 2-1 defeat to CF Monterrey, the Mexican visitors proved too strong at DRV PNK Stadium, delivering a crushing blow to end Inter Miami’s campaign.

The hosts started well when 19-year-old Daniel Pinter broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Club Leon equalized through Daniel Arcila in the 50th minute, but Yannick Bright restored Miami’s lead just three minutes later. However, the visitors mounted a stunning second-half comeback as Juan Dominguez leveled in the 61st minute before Arcila completed his brace in the 83rd minute to secure a 3-2 victory.

The standout moment came when Messi made a surprise return, entering as a substitute at halftime for Pinter to a thunderous standing ovation from supporters at DRV PNK Stadium.

Messi had missed the previous match against Monterrey following the passing of his father, spending that time in Argentina with his family. His return to Florida was swift; he arrived Wednesday morning and was listed on the matchday squad before taking the field.

Finishing 15th in the standings with three points, seven goals scored, and seven conceded, the result marked the worst Leagues Cup performance in franchise history.
