Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf cautioned on Sunday that a U.S. peace negotiation could be suspended if Israeli military operations against Lebanon persist, according to Anadolu.
In a statement posted on the U.S. social media platform X, Qalibaf highlighted that the ongoing Israeli offensives signify the United States’ failure to uphold its commitments.
“The Zionist attacks on the southern suburbs of Beirut yet again illustrate the United States’ inability or unwillingness to meet its obligations,” he added.
General Mohammad Jafar Asadi, deputy inspector brigadier general at Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces, warned in a Fars News Agency statement that the Israeli assaults on Lebanon would not go unanswered.
The Israeli military’s airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Sunday resulted in at least three fatalities and 15 injuries, despite an ongoing ceasefire, state news agency NNA reported.
The Israeli offensive, which has continued since March 2, has led to the occupation of several towns in southern Lebanon.
Since the onset of the campaign, the attacks have killed more than 3,700 people, wounded nearly 11,500, and displaced over 1.5 million, according to Lebanese officials.
While former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a deal with Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz would be signed that day, Iran disputed the timeline and said a final decision was still pending. After the Beirut strike, Trump stated that the attack should not have occurred “when we are so close” to the agreement, urging Israel and Hezbollah to “stand down” and expressing hope for a lasting peace.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, mediating between the U.S. and Iran, also indicated that the deal could be finalized within the next 24 hours.
Iran has called for an end to conflict on all fronts—including Lebanon—along with the release of its frozen assets and the lifting of U.S. port blockades, while the U.S. demands that Tehran halt its nuclear program and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
