Iran’s Supreme Leader Urges National Unity as Political Tensions Rise Amid Escalating U.S. Conflict

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has issued a stern message to the United States, vowing “unforgettable lessons” in response to the escalating conflict, while simultaneously emphasizing the need for domestic unity to counter external pressures.

Reiterating his stance since assuming the role of supreme leader in March, Khamenei called on Iranians to uphold “sacred unity” as a critical defense against the United States’ hostilities. He further stressed the importance of avoiding “division, political disputes, and social disparities” among the population and officials, warning that adversaries must not perceive any signs of weakness in Iran’s resolve.

The appeal comes amid heightened tensions following Iran’s recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the U.S. to suspend four months of fighting, a deal that has sparked intense backlash from hardline factions within the Islamic Republic. Critics accuse Khamenei of being coerced into accepting unfavorable terms, with some clerics and lawmakers accusing government officials linked to the agreement of treason. protests and street demonstrations, often backed by armed forces, have intensified in response to the MoU.

Khamenei acknowledged his initial opposition to the agreement but ultimately endorsed it after President Masoud Pezeshkian accepted responsibility as chairman of the Supreme National Security Council. This decision has reignited debates over Iran’s direction, particularly among staunch supporters of the Islamic Republic who remain skeptical of détente with the U.S. amid ongoing airstrikes on Iranian infrastructure.

In a coordinated effort to project unity, senior officials have rallied behind Khamenei’s message. Wartime joint command head Ali Abdollahi pledged the armed forces would honor the supreme leader’s directive for “sacred unity,” while also threatening the U.S. with a “decisive and destructive response” to its attacks on civilian targets. President Pezeshkian lauded Khamenei’s “wise guidance,” emphasizing that refraining from internal discord is essential for victory in this “historic juncture.” Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf framed obedience to Khamenei’s decree as a cornerstone of Iran’s national resistance and governance.

The messaging aligns with efforts to counter U.S. claims that hardline factions within Iran are sabotaging negotiations. Senior Iranian officials have rejected such narratives, instead highlighting their unified stance on issues like control of the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed support for a negotiated resolution to the conflict, lamenting that a delay of just ten days could have prevented recent casualties, including the assassination of security chief Ali Larijani and the destruction of key petrochemical facilities.

As tit-for-tat strikes persist, with both sides targeting strategic infrastructure, the prospects for renewed diplomacy remain dim. Khamenei’s call for unity underscores the fragile balance between maintaining hardline opposition to Western engagement and navigating the realities of an ongoing war that has disproportionately affected Iran’s civilian sectors.
