July 11 (Reuters) — Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, declared on Saturday that seeking vengeance for his father’s slaying, who also served as his predecessor, is a national imperative and “must certainly” be carried out, according to a written statement posted to his Telegram channel.
The message was delivered on the occasion of his father’s funeral, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, held months after the elder leader was killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28.
“We pledge to avenge the blood of the martyred leader and all the martyrs of these two wars from the criminal and disgraced killers,” Khamenei said in the statement.
